Venus has devoted herself to the study of dance and physical development since she took her first bellydance class in 1981 at the age of seventeen. From 1982–87 she was a member and co-choreographer of the Mirage Dance Company, a Victoria-based troupe specializing in group and solo dances in Middle Eastern folk, cabaret and interpretive styles. Since first performing Middle Eastern dance with MDC, she has made more than one thousand solo and group appearances in ethnic restaurants, private parties, special events, stage shows and TV.
Venus’ Middle Eastern dance training includes workshops with: Farida Fahmy & Mahmoud Reda, Nagwa Fouad & Mohammed Khalil, Jillina, Sahra Saeeda, Hadia, Yousry Sharif and intensive study with Yasmina Ramzy and Amir Thaleb. She completed 2 years of the Dance Major program at Simon Fraser University, including courses in ballet, dance history, teaching dance, movement analysis, music and choreography.
IN 1992 she took the Main Dance Projects Performance Training Intensive. From 1989-91 she also studied ballet and Pilates intensively.
From 1994-1998, Venus served on the Vancouver based Middle Eastern Dance Association's Board of Directors as President, librarian, newsletter editor and publisher, and event organizer. From 1991 to 2008, Venus worked full time as a Middle Eastern dance, performer and instructor, appearing regularly at Vancouver ethnic restaurants, private and corporate parties and special events, and building Venus Bellydance, which supplys instrutors for classes in 4 to 6 locations for beginner to advanced. In addition to being the principal instructor, choreographer and teacher trainer of Venus Bellydance, Venus also hosted major workshops with visiting master instructors and produced student recitals and stage shows in Vancouver.
In September, 2001 Venus returned to Simon Fraser University to pursue dual interests in art and physical function, through two programs of study: she received her BA in Art & Cutlure Studies in 2005 and a BSc in Kinesiology in 2006. Venus is currently living in Montreal, Quebec, pursuing her masters degree in kinesiology at McGill University. Venus' research involves using electromyography and motion capture of bellydance movements to learn more about how the nervous system controls complex trunk movements. (More to come)
In November, 2007 Venus filmed the 20-episode "Bellydance Workout with Venus" series produced by Channel M (now Omni), which airs regularly in Vancouver.
Venus continues to teach bellydance, offering classes at McGill Recreation.
