About Jillina
In May, 2001 Venus had the pleasure of seeing Jillina and her troupe perform in the all-star gala show at the 2nd International Conference on Middle Eastern Dance in California. Coming at the end of a LONG evening of speeches and performances, Jillina and her group energized the audience with a knockout group drum solo that brought the house down. Venus determined to bring Jillina to Vancouver to introduce the local dance communities to one of the fastest-rising stars of the North American workshop and performance circuit.
Jillina is one of the most captivating and sought after bellydance artists in the world today. Her engaging stage presence, the authenticity of her style, and her understanding of Arabic culture has commanded great respect and demand by the Arabic and Middle Eastern community.
Jillina has has performed in Europe, Japan, Australia, and Brazil and is regularly featured at Los Angeles' top night-clubs. In addition, she teaches workshops and co-produces award winning dance videos. She keeps up with the latest in Middle Eastern dance and music with annual trips to Egypt to study with master teachers and choreographers. This, combined with her extensive background in Jazz, Ballet, and Hip-Hop, has contributed to her powerful style and dynamic choreography.
At the Fourth Annual Award Show of the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (IAMED), Jillina won Best Modern Egyptian Dancer. At the Fifth Annual Awards, Jillina & The Sahlala Dancers won Best Dance Company. At the 2001 Giza Awards, Jillina won Best Instructional Video.
With the intention to raise the level of awareness of Middle Eastern culture and dance, and to bring about a greater appreciation of the beauty of this art form, Jillina founded the international dance company, Jillina & The Sahlala Dancers. Insisting on a high standard of professionalism within the company, all members are extensively trained in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Ballroom, Folkloric and Oriental dance, as well as being accomplished professionals in singing, acting and choreography.
Because of such diverse backgrounds each company member brings to Sahlala a unique, up-beat energy that makes every show a spectacular and thrilling experience. Their colourful Middle Eastern and world-fusion repertoire ranges from Raks Sharki and Arabic folkloric numbers to Armenian, Persian, Indian, Brazilian, Spanish, Greek and African.
Currently Jillina & The Sahlala Dancers can be seen performing at many of LA's finest Middle Eastern night-clubs and restaurants, including: Carousel, Byblos, Gitana, Wahibs, Your Place, and Seaside Palace. In this workshop, Jillina will be teaching a few of her specialties: drum solos, an unbeat Arabic pop choreography, and oriental entrances.
