Project description: This project was done as aa directed studies course for undergraduate credit at Simon Fraser University (Kinesiology Department). The goal was to record and analyze bellydance movements using motion capture and electromyography for the purposes of understanding and accurately descrbing the biomechanics of bellydance movements, confirming or improving teaching methods and assessing injury risk. In addition we are analyzing the data for what it can reveal about human motor control particularly of the spine and pelvis.

The data capture was conducted in a single session on August 24, 2005 using the EVaRT 6-camera motion capture system in the Injury Prevention and Mobility Lab.

We are currently performing further analysis on the data.

Electrodes were place on 22 different muscles of the trunk and left leg.

Reflective markers were placed on 33 anatomical landmarks for digital motion capture.

I custom-made 3 marker frames to define the separate three dimensional movements of different segments of the trunk.

These were placed on the Sacrum, thoraco-lumbar junction, and lower cervical spine.

Dr. Milner has written a program to anlayze the relative movements of these marker frames in all three dimensions.

From this we will get an accurate picture of the separate motions in different parts of the spine that characterize bellydance movements such as undulations and hip shimmies.
